This vehicle has Zenith-Stromberg carburettors. From 1969 to 1971 the cars were equipped with a B30A engine. This is the first six-cylinder that has been developed by Volvo since the Second World War. The 164 has a six-cylinder in-line engine. The 164 was sold from 1969 to 1975, and was succeeded by the 260 series.
